There are several critical issues involved with ergonomics in Semiconductor and Electronics Manufacturing Industry (SEMI) settings. First, the design and layout of the equipment, tools, and workstations is often maximized for space and activity, but seldom is ergonomics considered. Second, is the use of the microscope and gloveboxes, both of which were not designed to be used for eight hours or longer. Third, is the material handling that usually occurs in laboratories moving gas bottles, equipment, and others. Fourth, is the often tedious, small hand activities that involve large static forces in the hand. Fifth is the unique and large designs of the workstations that are supplied to the SEMI industry. Lastly, the unique aspects of the various levels of clean rooms makes it difficult to intiate appropriate breaks and job rotations. All these challenges are tough but usually interventions can be found. In addition to consulting, PHSC offers several training programs that would be of use to SEMI designers and workers. Also, PHSC is very familiar with the provisions of SEMI S8 and can help companies meets its criteria.

The benefits to the employee are reduced discomfort and musculoskeletal strain. The benefits to the employer are increased productive time and a higher morale among the workforce. Another benefit is reduced errors and increased output of the workgroup.

PHSC uses checklists to ensure all aspects are covered, but are not bound by the dictates of the lists. Experience has shown that ergonomic evaluations are unique and as much an art as a science, especially in the unique and varied environment of SEMI work environments.

Once PHSC has completed the evaluation, a set of recommendations are produced that cover engineering and administrative changes. The recommendations will also cover those things the employee needs to be responsible for to ensure reduction or prevention of symptoms. If necessary, PHSC can provide vendor resources.

We look forward to meeting with you to determine your needs.
