Return-to-Work Psychology
Conclusions
When integrating the needs of the return-to-work program there are five essential factors that must be considered:
  • the needs of the injured person;
  • the needs of the support network of the injured worker;
  • the financial needs of the corporation;
  • the needs of the supervisor and co-workers who also have to adjust to the absence of the injured worker; and
  • the needs of the treatment team.
The injured employee will suffer several significant impacts as a result of the injury, which translates into several important issues for their peers, organization, and social network such as family members. In addition, the family members, organization and peers will each be dealing with their own psychosocial issues. Unfortunately, many organizations are overlooking these psychological issues. The current heuristic in return-to-work is getting people back to work as soon as they are physically cleared to do something. Pain and other WMSD symptoms often have a psychosocial basis versus an organic basis.
