Our Model and Approach

Injuries and lost productivity happen because there is an incongruity between the capabilities of employees and the demands of the system. Capabilities are best defined as the individual's ability to do the required work across an entire shift throughout the expected working life of the person. Demands are defined as the combined requirements across an entire shift to complete the work. PHSC uses its talents to analyze, define, and develop solutions for eliminating the incongruity between the capabilities and the demands. There are three ways to close the gap: (1) Reduce demands, (2) Increase capabilities, or (3) Both. Working on both is best and requires a team that can use engineering talents to reduce demands combined with behavioral and biomechanical principles to increase employee capabilities.

However, this is not the entire picture. PHSC recognizes that Employee's and the Organization's behavior, motivations, and attitudes must be congruent with the intended use of the system. Otherwise, the employee will not use the system appropriately increasing the risk for injury and decreasing the system productivity. It is for this reason PHSC includes behaviorists in its team.

The result of our teamwork and comprehensive approach is not only decreased risk for injury, but also substantial, sustained increases in productivity.
